Get your car ready for winter. Poor car

Get your car ready for winter. Poor car servicing is just as bad as poor driving. When was the last time you checked your brakes and tyres?

Basic car awareness courses soon.

Hello all,

Have you ever opened the bonnet of your car? If you did, do you know how to check the oil on your car?

If the answer is no to either of those questions, maybe I can help.

I am currently developing a car awareness course that can be personalized to just you and your car.

At the moment, it is only for people in the Perth Western Australian metro area. I would love this to go as far as it can go.

So don’t be at the mercy of dealerships and money hungry workshops. This will empower you.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Getting ready for summer.

Hello car fans,

With winter gone and the warmer spring weather coming on in leaps and bounds, I thought it would be a good idea to to get ready for summer.

Summer time can play havoc to a number of systems in your car. Cooling system for your engine, air conditioning for your comfort, the car battery, tyres etc.

Check your engine cooling system for any leaks from your hoses, radiator, overflow bottle, pressure cap, housings, hose clamps and obviously the actual coolant level.

The cabin air conditioning needs to be checked at this time. There is nothing worse than expecting cool air to keep the cabin temperature at a comfortable level, when it is blowing warm air in your face. Try it out now and if it needs attention, take it to the mechanic or auto electrician. They aren’t that busy right now, and you’ll have it fixed in no time.

The car battery is very likely to fail when it gets an extreme change in temperature, and will give no warning as to when it will fail. Have your car battery load tested. Any mechanic, auto electrician, or reputable auto parts store will test these for you and will give advice on your next step. If the battery is even slightly suspect, I would be replacing the battery.

The change in temperature from cold to hot can destroy tyres very quickly indeed. Check your tyre pressures and the condition of the tread.

I hope this helps getting you ready for the warmer months. This can be checked with 10 minutes of your free time.

All of the detail on checking these systems are available on my book which can be purchased from my website, http://www.mrcarman.com.au in hard back, soft cover and ebook. I’m more than happy to answer any questions you may have through this blog.

V8 Supercars Hamilton Island New Zealand

Hello there,

Wow, what a great 2 days of racing.  The wet weather during race 1 certainly showed the men from the boys when it comes to balancing these fearsome race cars at these speeds.

Congratulations to all of the competitors who finished, and a welcome return to form for the Kelly brothers, Rick and Todd.  The continued rise of success from these young blokes will only gain momentum.

Race 2 showed a great New Zealand spirit with Auckland born Shane Van Gisbergen gaining his first ever victory and on home soil.  Long time race team Stone Brothers Racing under team owners Ross and Jimmy Stone, hail from New Zealand, showing great confidence in their young charger with a strong Ford Falcon at the end of the race.  It should boost the morale of all Kiwis, and Shane has all of a sudden become a hero to the nation.

If people only knew how hard these cars are to drive, let alone very fast, they would show a greater appreciation on the marvel of a driver who is in the groove.  Reaction and reflexes of a cat.  Have to train like endurance athletes to cope with upper body strain whilst confined to a noisy, often very hot (50 degrees C) in car cabin temperatures.  Hats off to these elite drivers.

Tell me what you think, I would love to know.

Cheers Mr Car Man

Simple very expensive mistake.

I recently had a conversation with my neighbour who was very upset. He has twin 17 year old boys who have recently gained their driver’s licenses. They shared a $3000.00 reasonable first car.

Last weekend he told the boys to go & fill the car with water in preparation for a long drive. Shortly after a short part of the drive the car broke down. After having the car towed home & then towed to a repair shop it was discovered that the engine oil was full of water.

The boys had filled their engine of water. It was going to cost more than $1000.00 to fix. I suggested that they would be better off starting again with another car. I felt sorry for all of them but I will be spending some time going over the basics of car ownership. These two boys were busy with exams when I was looking for guinea pigs, so they didn’t have time to do all of the tasks. Needless to say their father is anxious for them to learn from the very basics through to maintaining their current & future cars. I think the time spent learning car basics would have saved a lot time, stress & money.

Food for thought, tell me if you know of anything like this has happened to you or someone you know.

Formula 1 at Albert Park.

What a season opener for the 2011 F1 season in Australia!

Seeing Mark Webber qualify so well was a great boost to the start of the race.  3rd on grid.  Everyone was having issues with the new Pirelli tyres used for this year.  Maybe some curious issues with Red Bull F1 team with the cleverly designed front nose cone/splitter, all within the rules.  We’ll see how the new rules pan out in the next few races.

A great interest in Australia was the Vodaphone F1 team visit arguably Australia’s most iconic race track, Mt Panorama Bathurst.  Jensen Button smashed the lap record by over 20 seconds, with a truly mind blowing ride over the top of the mountain (8000 ft above sea level).  As part of the deal he swapped seats with Australian V8 Supercar driver, Craig Lowndes, who is also sponsored by Vodaphone and let Craig loose with a top level McLaren Mercedes F1 car.  Craig did the lap only a second slower than Jensen.  Still trying to find the You Tube clip of it in the F1 car..

It was a great weekend of motor racing.  Hope everyone who watched it, enjoyed it as much as I.

Cheers MrCarMan
